This project was interesting because I got the chance to try a different approach to do a high altitude 3d environment. I had already worked on something similar in Fire and Ice , when the two dragons were fighting in the sky. But this time, we had a cg airplane, and we had camera moves that were a bit more complicated because we had to be very close to the clouds. So I did a few test using the cloud system in Vue 7 and got some nice results. This led to an approach were I had a 2d matte painting layer of the sky and distant clouds and another layer of 3d clouds. The get more dynamic shots, we also used cloud layers that move very very close to the camera, helping the sense of speed.

Here is a shot I composited. We can see the 3d clouds as the camera follows the airplane.

On this shot, because the camera wasn't so close to the cloud layer and we had less parallax, I rendered some clouds and also used photo reference to create a matte painting that did the job.

For this one on the other hand, when the plane was loosing altitude fast, and was entering the clouds all I used was the 3d cloud system.

This shot was composited by Traian Constantinescu. I gave him a distant layer, with the ground, horizon and sky, and a 3d cloud layer to give depth and parallax to the shot.
